Jonathan Wilhite #24 CB (Auburn)
5’10”, 185 Senior
OPPONENT: KANSAS STATE
POSITIVES:
1. Despite slow turn, stayed with man downfield
2. Good play recognition, saw deep ball coming and lined up appropriately
3. Looked to be in good position for off-route play
4. Despite miss on press, had quick turn to stick with man
5. Decent pursuit to ball off coverage
6. Stuck on hip, took him out of play to force punt
NEGATIVES:
1. Takes lazy turns
2. On bump and run, turned his back to man, “bad pass saved his ass”
3. Missed at point of attack
4. Suspect to physical runners; “cat-fought” tackle out of bounds
5. Got pushed around in press, sat in zone, read pass and tripped on own feet
6. Poor play recognition; left up-man, followed deep-man instead of releasing to safety
7. Got caught up in traffic in run support, bad angle to runner, easily blocked
IMPRESSION:
Not too thrilled with Wilhite’s outing against K State, though to be fair he didn’t play the entire game, assuming due to injury. It seems as though his confidence out there is fine, but I foresee his play getting hurt by his own safeties’ mental mistakes as the year progresses. Can somewhat stay with man on fly/go routes, but needs to improve hip turn quickness and brush up on the mental aspects of the game. I can see more steady play from him in the future.
